    Dr. Mark Houston answered:

Smoking will cause endothelial dysfunction( loss of function of the lining of the blood vessel wall) which elevates blood pressure and also increases inflammation, oxidative stress, arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis of the arteries and coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke.  Once you stop smoking, over time, the risk of these problems decrease.  The blood pressure may also decrease slightly. However, you should NEVER stop any blood pressure medications without direct supervision and advice of your physician under any circumstance including having stopped smoking. Although your blood pressure may be easier to control, you will probably still need some type of blood pressure medication.
