The Society of Thoracic Surgeons answered:
Intermediate stage lung cancer (Stage 3) is usually treated by some combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Stage 3 cancers are the most common situation where the three specialties of thoracic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology work closely together; but there are many other scenarios where the best treatment may be a combination of chemotherapy plus radiation, surgery plus chemotherapy, or surgery plus both chemotherapy and radiation. Cooperation and collaboration among the specialties of thoracic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology are very important to achieve complete consideration of treatment options and the best range of choices for each individual patient. This is often achieved by a "Tumor Board" or a multidisciplinary cancer clinic where these specialists work together.
