Intermediate stage lung cancer (Stage 3) is usually treated by some combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Stage 3 cancers are the most common situation where the three specialties of thoracic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology work closely together; but there are many other scenarios where the best treatment may be a combination of chemotherapy plus radiation, surgery plus chemotherapy, or surgery plus both chemotherapy and radiation. This is often achieved by a "Tumor Board" or a multidisciplinary cancer clinic where these specialists work together.
