    Johns Hopkins Medicine answered:

Prior to prostate surgery, bowel preparation is required, as well as a strict diet regimen for 24 hours prior to your procedure.

At Johns Hopkins, we advise that you do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the surgery and drink one bottle of magnesium citrate (can be purchased at your local pharmacy) the evening before your surgery.

Drink only clear fluids for a 24-hour period prior to the date of your surgery. Examples of clear fluids that are OK include:

    Water
Clear broths (chicken, beef broth -- but no noodles, meat, or creamy soups)
Juices (apple juice or cider, grape juice, cranberry juice, fruit punch -- but no orange or tomato juice)
    Lemonade
    Sports drinks
Tea (you can add sweetener, but no cream or milk)
Coffee (you can add sweetener, but no cream or milk)
    Clear gelatin (without fruit)
    Popsicles (without fruit or creme)
Italian ice or snowballs (without marshmallow)
