Should I talk to my doctor about my hoarseness?

  1. In many cases, the cause of hoarseness is minor and no doctor visit is necessary. However, if you have had hoarseness for more than 2 weeks, have difficulty breathing, have difficulty swallowing, or feel a lump in your neck, then you should see a doctor. It is more urgent that children with hoarseness see a doctor as soon as possible, especially if they are drooling or are younger than 3 months of age.

    Hoarsness lasting more than 10 days should be evaluated. If it is not related to an infection or overuse you need to have your vocal cords visualized by your primary care physician or an ear, nose and throat specialist.
