Statins, are drugs that work by altering the metabolism of cholesterol, lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides and raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good” cholesterol). The benefits of statins seem to outweigh the risks (primarily of liver damage) for women with heart disease, but haven't been shown to decrease the risk of a fatal heart attack in healthy women. If you're at increased risk for heart disease and can't get your LDL cholesterol down to acceptable levels, discuss the matter with your doctor. If you're on the fence, a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test may help you decide.
