Whether you need to use a special denture cleaner likely depends on the type of dentures you have. For instance, if you have full or partial dentures, you may find dropping them in a "denture bath" overnight works best. Other dentures may only need to be "brushed." The bottom line is that like natural teeth, dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque and to help keep them from staining.

Talk to your dentist about what's best for your particular type of dentures.

Talk to your dentist to determine whether a special denture cleanser is a good idea for you. Many people use denture cleansers to clean and store their dentures; these cleansers are guaranteed to be gentle enough to clean the fragile dentures without damaging them. However, some people prefer to clean their dentures using diluted hand soap or mild dishwashing soap, which are also acceptable. Just be sure to use very mild, non-abrasive soaps or cleansers since dentures can be easily damaged with a harsh cleanser.

First, you must recognize that while your dentures look solid, under the microscope they have numerous pores and tracts that hold germs. These germs get food and water from your mouth and are not only present, but actually increase in numbers. Most important, our studies have shown that many of these germs (bacteria, yeasts, and molds) can make you sick. We have tested a number of the commercially available products and while they do not kill all of the germs, they can reduce the numbers, especially on the denture surfaces. We tested Polident and Medical (a European product) and both are effective at reducing the numbers but only if you soak the dentures overnight using the product dissolved in warm water.
