Stacy Wiegman answered:Follow your doctor's advice on eating a low-salt or low-sodium diet while taking amiloride-hydrochlorothiazide. This combination helps the potassium blood level to stay steady. The amiloride reverses some of the increased excretion of potassium caused by the hydrochlorothiazide. Avoid salt substitutes that contain potassium. Potassium-rich foods, such as bananas, prunes, raisins and orange juice, can also lower blood pressure. Ask your doctor for advice on how much of these foods you can eat.
