Should certain people avoid getting dentures?

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:You and your dentist should evaluate whether dentures are right for you. Certain types of dentures may not be available to certain people. For instance, partial dentures may not be an option for people whose existing natural teeth are not healthy or strong enough to support the dentures permanently. Similarly, overdentures may not be an option for people without healthy existing teeth. In general, though, anyone is a candidate for complete dentures. If teeth need to be removed prior to getting complete dentures, talk to your doctors and dentist if you have any medical conditions that may affect your tolerance for surgery or healing ability.

Dr. Saul Miller answered:Not only should certain people avoid getting dentures, but everyone should avoid dentures if at all possible. Every effort should be made to retain natural teeth.
That being said, from an anatomical perspective those individuals with irregular bone formations (such as tori) would do well to avoid dentures since these irregularities make fit and retention very difficult. Often surgical reshaping is indicated to modify these situations.
Also, people who are unable to have foreign materials in the mouth should avoid dentures, if possible. Although some people feel they would gag with dentures this is often a matter of carefully locating the various borders of the denture and learning to tolerate the denture.
Some people may have allergic reactions to denture material, and this may necessitate attempt to use a material to which the patient is not allergic.
So, yes, certain people may have to avoid getting dentures, while everyone should try.
