The natural thyroid hormone called calcitonin is a normal part of breast milk. Fortical is the man-made form. Calcitonin has been found to be digested in infants’ gastrointestinal tract. This includes the stomach and large and small intestines. It’s not known if this harms nursing babies. Breastfeeding mothers should either stop taking Fortical or stop nursing. You should discuss this with your doctor.
