Schizoid personality disorder may resemble schizophrenia in some ways, but it is a different type of mental illness. This mental illness affects how people relate to others, but it is not as debilitating as schizophrenia. Those with schizoid personality disorder are introverted, have trouble relating to others, and withdraw socially. Other typical symptoms of the disorder include:
- detachment from others
- avoidance of contact with people
- declining social engagements
- a lack of intimate relationships with friends and family members
- living in a fantasy world
Currently, there is no known cause of this disorder, and no known treatment. Because people with schizotypal disorder rarely seek help, it is unknown if talk therapy can help people with this illness.
