Dr. Bonnie Lynn Wright of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Clinical trials are the basis for medical research. Medical researchers must have their study proposals approved before they can do anything to start the trial. Every medical researcher is attached to a University in some way and every university doing medical research has an ethics review board of some type. This board requires that all clinical trials declare what risks are posed to participants, how these risks are disclosed to participants and what the researchers are ready to do to handle any emergency. Without safeguards in place the study is not approved to proceed.
If you are invited to participate in a clinical trial, you should expect to receive forms to fill out for the researcher and to take home for your records. There should be at least:
- a statement of the purpose of the study,
- exactly what you have to do to participate,
- how they will keep your information confidential,
- when and how your information will be destroyed,
- what risks you may endure by participating,
- who you can call if you have questions about the research, and
- who you can call if you have questions about the ethics of the study.
