What is the risk of infection with surgery?

The risks of surgery include infection in many forms. In general infection is the second leading cause of post-operative complications after a hematoma (bleeding). Infection may include skin only, deep seated infection (abscess), or contamination of a prosthetic device. Skin infections can include cellulitis or staph infections. This should be treated with appropriate antibiotics. Intravenous antibiotics prescribed in a hospital setting by an infectious disease specialist should occur. An abscess usually will require drainage of the wound site with appropriate antibiotics. Cultures and sensitivies should be taken including aerobic, anaerobic, and fungal specimens. Finally, a contaminated prosthesis (breast implant) usually will require removal of the implant with drainage tube placed for 7 days, cultures, and appropriate antibiotic therapy. The general average surgical risk for infection is between one-half to 1%.
