    Dr. Stuart Linder answered:

The most common risks of body contouring surgery are contour deformities and irregularities such as lumpiness or bumpy appearance.  Patients may also have other complications including seromas most commonly associated with ultrasonic liposuction, erythema or infection of the skin can occur, as can bleeding, and hematomas.  Those who smoke will have increased risks of possible fat necrosis, seromas or even skin death.  Finally, deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolus can occur when patients are placed in the supine position and liposculpting procedures are performed.

Anytime you have surgery, there are risks. Specific risks depend on the type and extent of the surgery, as well as the length of time you are under anesthesia. Basic risks with any surgery are bleeding, hematoma (blood collection), anesthesia side effects, wound healing problems, stroke, and heart attack.  Infection is a risk, but your physician will prescribe antibiotics to decrease your risk. Talk to your doctor about the risks associated with your procedure.
