When the placenta remains attached to the uterine wall, following birth, the uterus is unable to effectively contract to control bleeding. The retained placenta is also a potential source for an infection to develop. Therefore to prevent problems, the physician or midwife will inspect the placenta at the time of the delivery. If it appears that any tissue is remaining in the uterine cavity, interventions to remove it will be initiated.
