Rehabilitation after spine surgery will involve a physical therapist and their staff to develop a therapy plan to regain endurance, flexibility, and strength to the surgical area.  The therapy plan, usually done at a physical therapy facilities, may be one month up to six months depending on the complexity of the surgery.  After physical therapy, a work hardening or work fitness program for about 4-6 weeks maybe appropriate for overall general strength and fitness, this may be done at a fitness center.

Physical recovery from spinal surgery is most challenging and a time consuming process, where improvement is measure in small increments to reach full recovery.

Spine surgery is a serious matter and rehabilitation an important part of helping patients get the best possible result. Rehabilitation in the form of physical therapy and exercise routines can help patients recover faster from spine surgery.

A physical therapist is trained to help manage pain after back surgery. Controlling pain is a first big step in allowing patients to regain their strength. A patient cannot complete a rehabilitation program if there is too much pain.

A therapist may use ice, certain positions or movements or electrical devices to minimize pain.

The therapist will then focus on muscle conditions in areas of the back where they need to gain strength to provide stability following the back surgery.

There are small muscles that work around each vertebra and help stabilize the spine. If these small muscles are trained properly, they can provide good support for the spine and protect the newly operated area.
