It would be wonderful if scientists had discovered that eating a certain food or making some other simple lifestyle change lowered the risk of fibromyalgia. But so far, that hasn't happened. In fact, scientists are still trying to figure out what causes fibromyalgia in the first place. For now, your best bet is to follow basic guidelines for maintaining all-around health: Eat a balanced diet, get plenty of physical activity, and don't smoke. Ask your doctor about other steps you can take to disease-proof your body.

There are several risk factors for fibromyalgia that you can't change, such as your age or gender. But there are a few ways to reduce your risk for developing fibromyalgia. Learn to manage stress better since stress is thought to be one trigger for the condition. Maintain a healthy weight; Obesity is linked to an increased risk for fibromyalgia. Exercise regularly. In one recent study, women who exercised four times a week had a nearly 30% lower risk for fibromyalgia than women who didn't exercise. Get adequate sleep. People who are sleep-deprived are at higher risk for problems like weight gain and increased stress, which may make them more vulnerable to fibromyalgia.
