Dr. Mark Russo answered:There is no medical treatment, including statins that have been found to reverse aortic stenosis. In advanced stages, surgery is required to correct this problem.
Though there is a reasonable pathophysiologic basis for statin therapy in aortic stenosis, and some early data suggested that statins would provide benefit for patients with aortic stenosis. The largest multi-center, randomized, prospective, the SEAS trial, studying lipid-lowering therapy in patients with asymptomatic, mild to moderate aortic stenosis found no effect on mortality, aortic valve related events, or progression of aortic stenosis. As a result of this and other evidence, statins are currently not recommended in management of aortic stenosis.
