Has there been a recent epidemic similar to the bubonic plague?

There are many examples of epidemic infectious disease outbreaks in recent history. Perhaps, the most widely described example of a recent epidemic is the Influenza A Pandemic of 1918-1919, also known as the Spanish flu. It is estimated that this pandemic outbreak affected more than 500 million people worldwide and had a mortality rate of up to 20 percent. Given these statistics, this epidemic may have been the deadliest infectious disease epidemic in human history.
