What is the rate of incidence for gynecologic cancers?

The rate of incidence for gynecologic cancers varies depending on the type of cancer concerned. In 2005, 75,144 American women were diagnosed with some type of gynecologic cancer. Typically, about 47 in 100,000 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer each year. Uterine cancer is the most common form of gynecologic cancer; about 23 in 100,000 women will develop uterine cancer. About 12 in 100,000 women develop ovarian cancer, while 8 in 100,000 develop cervical cancer. About two in 100,000 develop vulvar cancer each year, while less than one in 100,000 develops vaginal cancer each year. The rates of incidence for gynecologic cancers have decreased over the past fifty years, due to heightened awareness of the importance of early detection of precancerous cells.
