    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
If you are visiting a dermatologist because you have a skin problem, you will probably have some questions. To make sure you remember them during your visit, write them down beforehand and take the list with you. Put the most important questions at the top of the list so they get answered first.

The questions you ask will depend on your condition. For example, if you are seeing a dermatologist because you have acne, you may want to ask about the best way to wash your face, which foods you should eat; how stress affects acne; whether or not you should go out in the sun, and whether or not you should squeeze a pimple. The more prepared you are with questions, the more likely you are to leave with answers.

As dermatology has become more popular we are seeing more dermatology imposters. This is very troubling to those of us who have completed three year residency training programs and have qualified and passed our board examination. Only physicians meeting these requirements can call themselves Board Certified Dermatologists. There are physicians who have not completed accredited residencies in dermatology who are practicing dermatology. Many of them are board certified in other specialties. This is troubling since they do not have the training or skills required to diagnose and treat skin diseases. For this reason it is imparative that you make sure that the physician you are seeing is a Board Certified Dermatologist.

You can ask what procedures the dermatologist specializes in. How often does he or she perform laser treatments or peels, liposuction, or other cosmetic procedures such as Botox or injectable fillers? Does the physician usually perform these procedures personally or have dermatologically trained registered nurses or residents do them? Don't be shy about asking a doctor about his or her credentials. You can do some sleuthing online to acquire information about a doctor's background. Find out what the dermatologist specializes in. Is it skin cancer surgery, cosmetic dermatology, or both? Is he or she affiliated with a hospital or medical group? Where did he or she train in residency? Did this physician do any subsequent fellowships or study under another doctor as a mentor? Has he or she published research papers, and where? Does the dermatologist teach or lecture regularly?
