    Dr. Lynne Kenney answered:
Freedom for a child is a space to play. It is also the space in which they relate to you as a parent or guardian, a nurturing person who loves them. A pro-social and value-centered method of teaching behavioral compliance to young children is to manage their freedom. Sometimes, restricting that freedom is appropriate.

The purpose of restricting a child’s freedom is threefold:

    1. It gives children the opportunity to learn that with freedom comes responsibility.

    2. It allows parents to establish themselves as the people at the top of the family hierarchy. In a house where parents are not at the top, chaos and disruption become the norm. If parents remain calm, and avoid escalating a crisis, they reinforce their own authority and teach children where the limits are.

    3. It ensures their safety.
