What is the purpose of family conferences offered by hospice?

American Cancer Society answered:Through regularly scheduled family conferences, often led by the hospice nurse or social worker, family members can stay informed about your condition and what to expect. Family conferences also give you all a chance to share feelings, talk about expectations, and learn about death and the process of dying. Family members can find great support and stress relief through family conferences. Conferences may also be done informally on a daily basis as the nurse or nursing assistant talks with you and your caregivers during their routine visits.

Juliet Wilkinson of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Family conferences are used as a tool to provoke thought and communication within the family. They may be offered during a period of indecision, familial discord or even deceit. Depending on where the issues lie, the family conference may be led by the nurse, social worker or chaplain as needed. Having a family conference called does not incite that there is 'anything wrong' with your family, or that your family has 'issues'. Grief, anger and confusion can cause discord within even the closest family and are a completely normal part of surviving death. The hospice associate will merely speed up the communication, decisions and mending, which would otherwise occur over months, with a conference.Family conferences are used as a tool to provoke thought and communication within the family.
