If you are having physical symptoms - then it is critical that you seek MEDICAL intervention - for example calling 911, going to your nearest emergency room (these symptoms would include sudden pain, chest pain, dizziness, fainting).  If you are having psychiatric symptoms of intense distress, a feeling that you want to harm yourself or someone else, a sense of being out of control, or any other symptoms that are causing your distress then, yes, a psychologist would be an appropriate place to start.  The assumption would be that you have a therapeutic relationship with this psychologist so that they are aware of your history etc.  They will then take the steps necessary to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.  If you are having an acute psychiatric crisis and are not currently working with a mental health professional of any kind - you would take the same steps as you would in dealing with an acute medical event - call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

An acute health event is not only physically debilitating, but can result in additional emotional stressors resulting from coping with the event.  While receiving medical care is the first step, psychological help may be the best next step in relieving some of the pressures of having to deal with stressful health conditions.  A supportive listening ear can be extremely beneficial to help reduce anxiety, fears, and distress caused by severe medical issues.
