    The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prevents insurers from using pregnancy as a pre-existing exclusion for health insurance coverage. This applies to women even when you are switching to a new job or a new health plan. If you were recently hired, the law also forbids your new employer’s health plan from imposing a pre-existing exclusion.
