If you think you’re in danger, leave immediately. If you have time, pack a suitcase and make copies of legal documents such as driver’s license and social security cards. Make a list of people and agencies you can call for help or shelters you can go. Consider finding a code word to use as a distress signal to family members, children, and friends. Inform them in advance that if they hear you use the code word, they should get help right away.
If you’re still in the home when a conflict arises, avoid rooms with items that can be used as weapons such as the kitchen and ones with no exit doors such as bathrooms. Make a note of safe places within the house where you can go.
