Do properitoneal hernias affect children differently than adults?

Properitoneal hernias are rare, even when an inguinal hernia is present in children or adults. Because of the rarity of this type of hernia, its affect on children and adults has not been thoroughly researched. However, it's believed to affect women more than men. Unless an inguinal or femoral hernia is also present, a visible bulge under the skin may not develop. Abdominal cramping, discomfort, or pain can develop as well as fever, and vomiting if complications develop with part of the intestine within the hernia sac.
