In Our Own Voice is an educational program offering people in recovery a chance to speak about their mental illness experiences. The program is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. In Our Own Voice is a unique opportunity for people in different communities to learn more about what it is like to live with mental illness. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, people with schizophrenia can benefit not only by speaking about their own illness, but by hearing other speakers. Attending In Our Own Voice programs teaches people with schizophrenia the steps to successfully recover from mental illness. In Our Own Voice offers other benefits for those with schizophrenia: a chance to work. Speaking in public and sharing one's story helps to build confidence in people with schizophrenia, as they learn to set goals and follow through on a long-term project.
