Thyroid disease can be detected by a careful medical history and then confirmed with a blood test. Sometimes a woman may have troublesome symptoms but her thyroid blood tests are only mildly abnormal. These individuals may have subclinical hypothyroidism. Additional specialized blood tests can show that thyroid gland function has been disturbed.

Rarely, thyroid disease can be present with normal laboratory results. This requires specialized blood work or an ultrasound of the thyroid to check for nodules that may disrupt the metabolism.
