  1. Though hearing impairment is not entirely preventable, there are things you can do to reduce your risk. If you are frequently exposed to loud noises by your occupation or leisure activities, wear some sort of ear protection such as ear plugs. Turn your music and television down to a volume that is safe for your ears. Generally, if something makes your ears ring, it is too loud. Drugs that can affect the ear (ototoxic drugs) should be used carefully and only under medical supervision. Vaccinate your children against meningitis, measles, mumps, and rubella; the high fevers that accompany them damage the inner ear. Pregnant women should be vaccinated against rubella before pregnancy and screened for infections that could harm the baby's hearing. Early detection and treatment are valuable advantages.
