To protect your child from bug bites, take preventive measures like avoiding infested areas (Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street is the only one who belongs near the garbage), keeping kids inside at dusk, eliminating standing water around the house (or where your kids play), and making sure that windows have screens. Feel free to use insect repellant with DEET (it's enormously effective); just be sure to apply it outdoors if you're using a spray and wash your child's skin thoroughly with soap and water at the end of the day.
