    Yes they can. It takes some work, especially if the person lacks mobility, but it can be done. Good nutrition plays a role. It is important to eat a balanced diet with adequate protein (a 3 oz portion is equal to the size of a deck of cards). Also, vitamins and minerals are important so be sure to include some fruits and vegetables in your diet. If unable to take adequate protein, supplements such as boost or ensure (diet boost or glucerna, if a diabetic) can be used, if the person is able to tolerate thin liquids. Turning and positioning is also important because sitting or lying on the same spot for more than two hours is a risk. Moisture plays a role so it's important to keep the skin clean and dry without pulling on it and tearing it in the process. Also, if able, the person should walk or exercise to improve circulation.
