  1. Prenatal care should focus on eating well, getting enough exercise, taking prenatal vitamins, and avoiding harmful substances like alcohol and drugs. Make sure you're getting enough iron, calcium, and protein through the foods you eat, even if you're taking a vitamin supplement. Additionally, during this time, you are at risk for increasing your blood pressure through unneeded stress. This stress can lead to a dangerous form of high blood pressure called preeclampsia. So the best prenatal care is to take it easy - eat and sleep well!

During the second trimester visits to the healthcare provider are scheduled every four weeks. The content of the visits is much like the first trimester; urine sample, blood work, vital signs and weight. The new additions are listening to fetal heart tones and measuring fetal growth with serial fetal height measurements. An ultrasound may be done to assess fetal growth and placental location. An alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) screen or triple screen may be done between 15 to 20 week, based on the individual's woman's history and situation. Glucose screening tests are done between 24 and 28 week to detect gestational diabetes. Many women consider the second trimester the best part of pregnancy.
