Should pregnant women get treated for syphilis?

Women who are pregnant can and should be treated for syphilis. If they don't get treatment while infected with syphilis, pregnant women are more likely to have a miscarriage or to have a stillborn child. Ideally, women should be tested and treated for syphilis before becoming pregnant. However, if a woman is diagnosed with syphilis while she is pregnant, she should still be treated for the infection. The only treatment for pregnant women with syphilis is penicillin. Even if women get treatment while pregnant, their babies should still get treated with penicillin when they're born. This is extremely important, because children born with syphilis can develop serious complications and may die.
