  1. In general, pregnant women don't have a greater chance of bloating. Bloating is an enlarged abdomen caused by excess gas. It is usually caused by food intolerance, but can have other causes.

After being pregnant X3, I know that pregnant women can feel bloated-even though their "abdomen, uterus, mid-section" is growing at the same time. Here is why: there are hormones kicking in overdrive and some actually slow the rate of digestion--that's the first trimester. By the time the third trimester rolls around, naturally the uterus increases in size and pushes the other "organs"-stomach, intestines, lungs, etc. aside or up!

So as a Registered Dietitian, I encourage all pregnant women to do the following.

    • Try to eat high-fiber foods as you tolerate them-aim for at least 5-6 or more cups of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains with fiber and beans. All are great sources of so many nutrients anyway.
    • Drink water with all of these foods to push out the fiber otherwise that bloating feeling is there.
    • Walk or swim daily. This also helps to push digestion along and makes you feel more like yourself-well, at least a little bit!
