Yes it is. Most people think of dessert as an unhealthy indulgence after dinner, full of lots of sugar, unsaturated, and trans fats, but that does not have to be the case, eating dessert should not be a dilemma. When I think of healthy, I imagine a lighter dessert and something I can enjoy and benefit from nutritionally. It is easy to get your sugar high from fruits or natural sugar substitutes or no sugar at all such as agave. Egg white or natural egg replacements like chia seeds and monounsaturated fats can be used in cookies, cakes, and pies, and other baked goods. Loaded with vitamin C, berries are a great way to make a delicious dessert. A bowl full of blueberries also has antioxidants and strawberries are low calorie and a good source of potassium. Top them with a dollop of probiotic yogurt or a kifer smoothie and voila. The best monounsaturated fats for baking are canola and olive oils. Nuts like walnuts, almonds, and pistachios are also monounsaturated. Sweeteners like agave, stevia, and raw honey are easy to find at the store. Whether you are watching your weight, have allergies to certain ingredients used in common desserts, or simply want to limit your intake, you can still satisfy your sweet tooth. Creamy ice cream, silky puddings, fruit cobblers, moist cake, and chunky cookies can all be made with healthy ingredients.

Yes, it is possible to make healthy desserts. One thing that you can do is be willing to experiment and try some of the following recipe substitutions: a tub of margarine for butter; Splenda for sugar; evaporated skim milk for cream; egg substitute for eggs; yogurt for margarine. To help, look up some recipe sites on the internet and type in healthy desserts and see what comes up.

It is possible to make your favorite desserts have less calories with sugar substitutes and fat substitutes. However, some feeding studies have found that when 2 groups of animals are allowed to each as much as they want but one group gets sugar and one gets artificial sweeteners, the artificial sweetener group consumes more calories. This is partly due to the fact that studies have found artificial sweeteners do not trigger the same pleasure receptors in our brain as sugar. So we just don't find it to be as satisfying. I like to follow the 80/20 rule. If you can consume a healthy and balanced diet 80% of the time, then 20% of the time if you want to consume your favorite dessert (cakes, cookies, pies, etc.) go ahead and enjoy it. Just watch your serving size, if a cake recipe says it makes 12 servings, you need to cut it into 12 equal slices and consume one serving. When you are consuming your favorite, really take your time and enjoy it. Consume it with little distraction, smell it, really savor the flavor and think about what you are doing. You will get way more satisfaction from one serving when consuming it this way, than eating a lot of the dessert while multi-tasking.
