Does polycystic kidney disease affect children differently than adults?
-
In the more common dominant form of polycystic kidney disease (PKD), symptoms usually do not show up until adulthood. In the rarer but more serious recessive form of PKD, symptoms typically start at birth, and serious cases may lead to death soon after delivery. In the recessive form of PKD, the cysts grow more quickly and in greater number compared to the dominant form, leading to more rapid loss of kidney function. Children with recessive PKD may also have damage to their liver.
