    A study by Ohio State University found  that gum recession was more prevalent among people with lip piercings, and the depth of the recession was more than double in those with piercings.

    Dr. Saul Miller answered:

    Lip and tongue piercings can have a significant effect on gum recession, and the support for the tooth can be seriously and permanently damaged. In addition, teeth and restorations (crowns, veneers and fillings) can be damaged, and there is the potential for periodontal (gum) infection and even tooth loss.

    Other problems related to piercings are altered speech and chewing ability, scar tissue and development of metal hypersensitivity.

    Yes. Metal from piercings can rub and damage the tissue around the teeth and lead to recession. This recession can be treated with connective tissue grafting.
