There is not much research to show whether phytosterols are safe for pregnant or breast-feeding women, or if they can harm a developing fetus or nursing infant. However, phytosterols may have an effect on hormones, and there is a possibility that this could cause problems for a nursing infant. If you are breast-feeding, it may be best to avoid this supplement. Phytosterols are also used to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH).

Phytosterols (plant sterols) have been considered safe as they are naturally occuring and have been shown to help reduce cholesterol levels. The concern, of course, is how the phytosterol is supplied, and if any other additives have been introduced into the packaged product. Before taking any medication, vitamin or herbal supplement, it is always best to check with your healthcare provider, or your child's pediatrician. If someone believes that they should be taking a cholesterol-lowering agent, it is possible that your healthcare provider can suggest a better option, or the best option for an over the counter phytosterol supplement.
