Your periodontist will determine if you will benefit from crown lengthening by taking X-rays, reviewing your history, and examining your teeth and gums. He or she will discuss with you the benefits and risks of the procedure. If you agree, surgery will be scheduled.

It is important to get your teeth and gums in good condition before the procedure. A professional tooth cleaning before the procedure may help. Sometimes crowns may be needed. If so, a temporary crown will be placed.
