Illnesses such as cholecystitis and certain infections can increase your risk of developing this form of cancer. Cholecystitis is a type of inflammation of the gallbladder that usually results from the presence of gallstone blockage in the biliary system. Chronic Salmonella and Helicobacter infections may also increase your risk. In either case, the development of gallbladder cancer may be related to irritation of the cells that compose the gallbladder epithelium.
