Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that the body can’t make without precursors from food. They appear to help reduce triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol, and both effects are beneficial in warding off atherosclerosis. Interestingly, however, in some randomized clinical trials, supplementation with omega-3s beyond what you’d get in a prudent diet has not led to improved cardiovascular outcomes.
