Can anything offset diarrhea after gall bladder removal?

Elizabeth Casparro answered:Limiting fat and insoluble fiber in your diet after gall bladder removal should offset diarrhea. High fat foods include anything fried, with butter or oils, nuts, seeds, avocadoes and whole milk dairy products. Limiting insoluble fiber is also recommended because it is the type of fiber that promotes regularity such as bran, apple skins, etc. However, soluble fiber is recommended because it will bulk up your stool. Examples of these foods include oatmeal, apples without skins, bananas and more.

Dr. Rupa Seetharamaiah of Baptist Health South Florida answered:As many as 1 in 3 people who have had their gall bladder removed develop diarrhea. In many cases, the diarrhea resolves soon after the surgery. Rarely does it last for an extended period of time.
The cause of diarrhea, or frequent watery stools, is not well known. It could be the result of an increase in bile acids entering the large intestine, and that can act like a laxative. Foods will also move more quickly through the body from the increased level of bile in the intestines.
Your doctor may consider anti-diarrheal medications, such as loperamide (Imodium A-D), or medications that impair absorption of bile acids, such as cholestyramine or aluminum hydroxide.
You should also limit foods or ingredients that can worsen diarrhea, including: caffeine, dairy products, greasy foods and very sweet foods. As many as 1 in 3 people who have had their gall bladder removed develop diarrhea.
