Non-steroidal inflammatories in combination with stretching exercises is one place to start. Other non-surgical treatments include epidural steroid injections or short courses of oral steroids for acute exacerbation. Occasionally chronic neuropathic pain medications like gabapentin or pregabalin are used for any burning or uncomfortable pins and needle sensations. Muscle relaxants like baclofen or tizanidine are sometimes used for the muscle spasticity (i.e. stiffness) that can develop in the legs.
