Nexium can prevent gastric uclers because the damage is the result of too much stomach acid. Nexium works as part of a family of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. Nexium decreases stomach acid production, and in combination with antibiotics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Nexium may help prevent gastric ulcers.
