You may need specific health insurance when pregnant because your pregnancy may not be covered under your current plan. If you didn't sign up for pregnancy coverage when you enrolled in the plan, some plans will not let you add or change the policy later when you get pregnant. Private individual plans often carry this restriction. Getting pregnancy insurance coverage covers you from the first doctor's visit when you discover you're pregnant until after the baby is born. The insurance makes sure you and the baby receive the treatment and medicine you need, including tests and emergency services. Hospitalization and follow-up care is also covered.
