Some veterans with depression may prefer to try alternatives to medications or traditional therapies. There are herbal remedies like St. John’s Wort and gingko biloba, which are believed to alleviate some of the symptoms of depression, although there is little proven evidence of their effectiveness or safety. It is known that St. John’s Wort can interact with SSRI drugs often prescribed for depression and cause serotonin syndrome, which is potentially dangerous. Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency has been linked to depression, and can be treated with fish-oil capsules, or by eating oily fish like salmon or mackerel. Omega-3 fatty acids also have the added benefit of being good for heart health. Other alternatives are complementary therapies such as meditation, acupuncture, reflexology, massage, and music therapy
