The nasal spray vaccine does not contain thimerosal, a preservative that some people have worried could contribute to side effects from vaccines, including possibly autism. Some other versions of the flu shot vaccine do contain thimerosal. However, multiple reliable research studies have confirmed that there is no risk from the small amount of thimerosal used in these vaccines. If you have concerns about thimerosal, talk with your doctor or pediatrician about getting the nasal spray vaccine or a form of the flu shot that does not contain the preservative.
