Studies have shown that Namenda may be more effective when combined with another Alzheimer's drug called a cholinesterase inhibitor. These cholinesterase inhibitors treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's differently than Namenda does. They reverse the decrease of acetylcholine, a chemical in the brain that is thought to be linked to Alzheimer's symptoms such as memory loss. Cholinesterase inhibitors improve the brain's ability to process acetylcholine either by increasing the amount of it or by enabling the nerve cells to respond to it better. Namenda treats the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease by binding to the NMDA receptor and deterring the glutamate in the system from being overly excited. Cholinesterase inhibitors are most often prescribed at the early onset of the disease, and Namenda is often prescribed when Alzheimer's is more advanced.
