Can muscle spasms be treated with physical therapy?
-
Dr. Vincent Burke answered:Often, after an injury to the body, muscles react in a "guarding" fashion to protect at first. After a while, the muscles may have a difficult time calming down causing tightness which may lead to pain. This becomes a cycle of pain and spasm. This cycle may be hard to break if not dealt with soon. Going to a Physical Therapist will assist in breaking through this pain/spasm cycle. The program may consist of but not limited to, corrective exercises, proper ergonomic and posture education, a home program, joint protection, soft tissue work, stretches, joint mobilizations and any modalities which is appropriate such as moist heat, cold packs and electrical stimulation to name a few.
