How does monogamy differ from abstinence in preventing STDs?

Abstinence, or the complete lack of sexual activity, is the most effective protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Diseases that are spread through genital or oral contact cannot be spread if that contact doesn't occur. Monogamy, though it entails sexual contact with only one partner, still is subject to the risk of any potential previous sexual contact of either partner.
